Engine War: New Imperial Knights

Psychic Awakening Engine War has given us New Imperial Knights warlord traits, stratagems, and Household Traditions. Very similar to their fallen counterparts, from Engine War: Chaos Knights that we covered. Variety is the Spice of life and with the new rules here, you get more of that While you Crush the enemies of the Imperium.

Imperial Knights

Questoris Mechanicus, Heal 6-8 wouns a turn

The new Questor Allegiance for Mechanicus bonus is to regain a wound every turn helps with this. Just think, how many wounds you can get back in 1 turn. Tech Adept stratagem can heal the same knight again. Necromechanic warlord trait to repair for 2 wounds each time. Don’t forget you can take a bonus warlord trait from Engine War: New Adeptus Mechanicus. Questor Mechaicus for 1 and the relic Mark of the Omnissiah for d3. 6-8 wounds a turn. With the new Mechanicus specific warlord trait, you could have 2 bonus wounds, to begin with.

When bringing your friends for an Imperial Knight, you can use Knight of the Cog for 1 CP to allow your Knight to benefit from the Canticles of the Omnissiah ability. That matters because Rotate Ion Shields cost 3 CP for a Dominus Class Imperial Knight but the Lucius canticle is for +1 to invulnerable saves. So with all that you can have 3 Knights with a 4++ invulnerable save.

Questor Imperialis gets in on the fun.

Always fight first helps when your opponent has to charge multiple units in to try and kill a Knight. Such as Custodes if they are not using large squads. The base +1 to move and advance rolls for questor Imperials may seem small when compared to their Mechanicus allies but with a reduced play area in 9th edition it will add up. 13” move with Household Tradition Front-line Fighters is a 25” threat area where your guns have bonus armor penetration.

Mixed Questoris Allegiance

It may seem like Schrödinger’s restriction in that you can and can not do something with mixed Questoris. For the entirety of the 8th edition, knights could always take a mixed Questoris Knight Lance because the Questoris Allegiance limitation does not apply to Freeblade units. Your House Raven Knight lance would be all Questor Mechanicus. They would have to be. However, Canis Rex is a Questor Imperialis Freeblade. The current Forgewolrd FAQ reinforced the fact that Questoris oaths were different from those of Household. This has been reinforced in Psychic Awakening: Engine War. The reason to mix between Questoris Allegiance is for stratagem, relic, and warlord trait access. Sally forth the stratagem to put an Imperials Knight in reserve for example. While the rest of your Questoris Mechanicus army start on the frontlines.

New Imperial Knights

New Imperial Knights: Stratagems

The new stratagems may be a bit too situational for most people as most of the stratagems are locked to specific Data Sheets however, read the fine print for Repulsing Conflagration. Notice you don’t have to hit the unit that charged you to subtract the charge by -2. Unit A let’s say an Impulsor with a 4++ Invulnerable save charges you to soak up overwatch. You fire overwatch, then pop this stratagem then the impulsor limps into combat even with the -2. Unit B a squad of assault centurions then goes to make the charge and overwatch can’t even be shot at them. It doesn’t matter the ground is soaked in burning Promethium and they are still at a -2 to their charge roll.

New Imperial Knights: Traditions

Household Traditions for your New Imperial Knights can be mixed and matched provided you don’t choose one of the traditions that counts as 2. What stands out here is Honored Sacristans essentially ignore AP 1. This matters more against Chaos armies. Autocannons, Hellforged Deredeos, and Chain Cannons are a lot less scary even with veterans of the long war against a toughness 8 knight that ignores armor-piercing and has a 2+ save. Of course, they have their bigger guns like lascannons to shoot but even with that, there is that 4++ invulnerable save to fall back on.

Greyknights and other Mind Bullet heavy armies can be a hard counter to Imperial knights. The Household Tradition that helps here is Sanctified Armor for a 5+++ to ignore wounds in the psychic phase. This Tradition leaves room for the previously mentioned Front-line Fighters Tradition to be taken as well.
