Engine War: The New Adeptus Mechanicus

The new Adeptus Mechanicus, they no longer just march to war, they ride in style. With an expanded range of models, they are ready for war in a new way. In the past, we have discussed the Admech tactics at the Intermediate level. That included units that were released after the codex was originally published. GW has decided to round them up with the extended model range for Psychic Awakening Engine War.

Beware The Skies

The new Adeptus Mechanicus flyers have the gracefulness of Aeldari Flyers with a Turn Move Turn ability (Maneuverable Craft) but bring the raw power of Imperium Hover Jet technology. These units will never fear flying off the edge of the board unless they want to. Especially with proposed 9th edition changes. It will be interesting to learn if flying transports get to take their cargo off the board with the Archaeopter Transvector and its capacity for 6. That capacity pretty much includes all infantry that hasn’t been lobotomized or happens to be Belisarius Cawl.

All the Archaeopters can use the stratagem Electro-Filament countermeasures. To shut off aura abilities. You’ll have to be close to use this so essentially a suicide mission for the flyer moving in close to use this ability that works on enemy models and not whole units. The trick will be to pull models outside of the aura denial area to turn back on your aura if your units provided one. Such as the 3″ aura for savior protocols.

New Adeptus Mechanicus Gunships

Raptorial Strafing Run adds one to hit versus non-fly units is great. Especially when added to the Canticle Benediction of the Omnisia to reroll 1’s to hit. If you hovered and didn’t move, that means you’re hitting on a 2+. Mars can of course just use the canticle to count as stationary if they want to move and shoot without penalty. And with the potential double prayers, they may still have that reroll 1’s.

The Archaeopter Fusilave helps to bring some mortal wounds via its bomb rack. But the real reason you bring this model is to drop a Seismic Bomb. This is in addition to the basic bomb rack to apply the SHAKEN effect to halve the movement, advance, and charge rolls.

Beware the skies because joining the Archaeopters are the Pteraxii Sterylizors and Skystalkers. The Sterylizors also have melee weapons striking on the charge at the strength 5 Ap -1 w/ 3 attacks each. Use the Deeply Sunk Talons to keep an enemy infantry unit in combat on a 2+. Great for keeping infantry with the fly keyword stuck in. As a Skitarii unit they can even ride in the Archeaopters

The Omnissiah Provides

Games Workshop murdered ahem made them legendary, the Guard Cavalry. Except for Forgeworld and the Death Korp of Krieg. However, while they taketh away, they also giveth in the form of new Adeptus Mechanicus cavalry. The Serberys Sulphurhounds and Raiders. The Raiders may seem short-ranged with their weapons as mounted snipers. With a pregame move of 9″ and a regular 12″ move plus advance roll they provide a nice ranged threat for characters.

To reduce that penalty for advancing and charging, use the Conqueror Doctrina Imperative to add 2 to their hit rolls for a total of 2+ to hit. And if you have gotten a bit too close, Tactica Obliqua will allow them to move or fallback instead of firing Overwatch. Nevermind that you couldn’t fire Overwatch in the first place if your unit was within 1″ of an enemy model. Of course, your opponent can just deploy even further back than they otherwise would but you have a tool for that as well.

Sicaran Ruststalkers can finally be used with a first turn charge. Circuitous Assassins will allow you to remove them at the start of the movement phase and at the end of that same movement bring them back in.

The Castle Gunline got better

There are new warlord traits that each have 3 potential auras to choose from every turn. The New Adeptus Mechanicus joins other armies with a secondary warlord trait on a different character. Between Daedolosus, a Manipulus, and a Dominus and now 2 warlord traits, your overlapping auras can make your gun lines particularly efficient in regards to hitting. A Skorpius Disintegrator can now have up to a +4 to hit. Consider the Warlord trait Fabrications of the Artisan for a bonus to Armor Penetration. The ability for your vehicles to fall back and shoot if it’s needed. Choose your own adventure Forgewolrd traits are a bit more limited than other armies but some are unique.
