This weekend’s other Warhammer 40k 3 day event saw a shake up to the meta at the Warzone Houston Event. Yes there was green with a side of more green but more importantly Chaos Space Marines came in first with all the big guns.
Warzone Houston First place – Russell Tassin
This black legion relies on old reroll rules. Essentially, Abbadon gives every vehicle full rerolls to hit. Of course if he is busy being a melee beat stick, the second Chaos Lord at least provides reroll 1’s to hit.
The 3 squads of cultist have a very important role to play serving the Dark Gods. Retrieve Octarius Data. While one squad is relatively well protected inside of the Termite Drill, the rest will take advantage of Strategic Reserve and Tide of Traitors. The ability to pull one squad from the board and place onto any table edge is easily the 4th Retrieve Octarius Data for a 13 point secondary.
The Khorne Lord of Skulls now gives back 2 CP for a Superheavy Auxiliary as it shares a keyword with the rest of the Black Legion army. Those 2 CP can help offset the 3 CP cost to putting the whole Lord of Skulls into strategic Reserves.
Dense Cover can matter. The forest area terrain was considered to be 5” high for the event to slow a titan but the negative to be hit was used defensively by units placing in the area terrain. Well Played Russell.

Warzone Houston Second Place – Colin Mcdade
Colin “McDakka” Mcdade has pulled out a second second place in back to back weekends. This time it was round 9 when the orks just couldn’t pull it out. The dice gods are Brutal and occasionally Kunnin but Colin’s list is the only list to make the top 8 undefeated.
The Tellyporta stratagem can help get the units across the board combined with a 3d6 charge they should get stuck in pretty early. Otherwise like his Ironhalo performance this list is right there with the best of them.

Warzone Houston Third Place Matt Tweedle
Third place went to Orks. While Drukhari were eliminated in the second round at the same time they were held to a paltry 48 points game one of the top 8 cut off. Meaning these Ork Buggies drifted into third. Matt’s Orks also broke against the Black Legion.
These orks also took advantage of the Freebootaz bonus to hit. With a Kustom Force Field to blunt the worst of an opponent’s shooting. At 270 points the Meganobz can make a tough To The Last Unit to clear off. Or a mean counter charge unit to push back anyone who gets too close to the Squig Buggies while the scrap Jets are busy wrecking face elsewhere.
It does seem like both detachments could be made into a single outrider for saving command point but perhaps the list was originally intended for 3+ flyers.
