The Best First Army for Warhammer 40K 9th Edition

If you’re already a fan of Warhammer 40,000 and you already know which faction you love then this article isn’t for you. This is for the beginner. Or for your friend who’s just starting out, and you want to help them get into it. Especially when they ask what is the Best, first army for Warhammer 40K.

When you’re first starting the game most people are going to pick Space Marines because they’re the poster boys of the game. The Space Marines are the heroes.

Almost everybody’s first army in Warhammer 40,000 is going to be Space Marines.

But that shouldn’t necessarily be the case.

As a new player to the game, if you start with Space Marines, you’re going to find that everyone knows how to defeat you. Everyone knows what your army does. You’ve got the same army as everybody else.

In every edition half the starter set is going to be Space Marines the other half is going to be something else. And the “unliked” half is almost always the non-Space Marines. Because of that, you can buy them online so much cheaper than the Space Marine set.

For this reason – I would say that right now the right army to start with are the Necrons.

Now here’s why I like necrons:

They’re easy to paint. You can get away with spraying them black, and layering it with a spray of silver or lead. If you don’t know how to do paint like that then you may want to join our Facebook group “Game Talk for Gamers.” It’s easy for a beginner to paint using this style, especially with necrons. So as a new player, you’ve got a really easy army to paint.

They’re as powerful a Space Marines in many ways, they’ve got similar saving throws. They’ve got firepower with similar strength stats. Sure, sometimes they have shorter range, but it’s more powerful. It’s a trade off. And they’re brutal in close combat in 9th Edition. It’s a great army to play with.

And then once you’ve got the hang of playing it, and you’ve gotten into the game and the rules, then you can start thinking of what your second army would be. And if you want to do Space Marines, then you absolutely can. Or maybe just want to expand your Necrons.

Eulis Sanders ended the 2019 ITC Season as number one Necron player Player also agree that Necrons are the Best First Army for Warhammer 40K
