The SoCal Open Warhammer 40k tournament saw 9 Rounds of Warhammer fun take place this weekend. While the final round of the SoCal Open was a blowout leading to a concession, the top cut single elimination meant there was no reason to play out the game. A minimum of second place was already guaranteed to Sean Nayden.
At the SoCal Open we saw green at the top of the podium and you can expect to keep seeing green on the podium for the foreseeable future.
SoCal Open 1st place Logan Heath – Orks
Congratulations to Logan Heath on winning the SoCal Open Warhammer 40k tournament! While Logan did lose to Matt Estrada during round 5, with enough points he qualified for the top 8 cut. Furthermore, he won the whole event after tearing through a Be’lakor Chaos Daemons list round 7, Drukhari rounds 8 and 9. The army that managed to hold Heath off at the SoCal Open was Adeptus Mechanicus. Heath’s list isn’t as spammed out with repeating units as the buggies are limited to just units of 1 model.
The perk of that build is the ease of moving models without worrying about coherency. Points saved due to units of one allowed for Mek Gunz with Kustom Mega Kannons and Warbike squads. This makes the Engage On All Fronts very achievable even as the planes go down. Freebootaz hits hard when +1 to hit comes into effect. With multiple small units and the 3 planes, this effect is easily triggered.
What keeps a Ramshackle army going is the damage reduction. The Kustom Force Fields will also help in keeping the units alive in case the army doesn’t go first. The Flyers can stay near the Wazbom Blastajet for invulnerable saves as well.

SoCal Open 2nd Place Sean Nayden – Drukhari
Drukhari are fans of pain to be sure but when playing into a Ramshackle army, there’s not much they can do but stand there and take it. At least in regards to an army of Venoms carrying Splinter Cannons which are -1 damage due to not being strength 8. Poison versus vehicles is not the ideal target. That being said, this is clearly a great list as it went undefeated all the way until the end.
While the Dark Angels player can only be wounded on a 4+ superseding the Serpent Kiss bonus. Sean beat the same list by the same player twice during rounds 6 and 7 at the SoCal Open. Volume of fire and Precision Blows will help in that regard.
Well done Sean Nayden as you did get to beat up on all those mean Admech list on your way towards second.

SoCal Open 3rd Place Junior Alfeje – Drukhari
Drukhari on Drukhari violence saw an end to Juniors run towards the top. Quinton Johnson had another chance to come third but round Junior Managed to gain 41 points against Sean Nayden. The myriad of Dark Lances are great at swatting flyers out of the skies. Easily ready to play into buggy and flyer spam. Proof of which can be seen with the round 5 pairing against Frank Deloach and his Orks.
The Cult of the Cursed Blade detachment allows for additional mortal wounds in melee, a bonus overwatch and poisoned 2+ for 5 plasma grenades during that match up. An interesting change up in the list design especially at the 2 Hellion squads are toughness 5.
Great Job Junior as you stuck with it after losing by 1 point round 1.
