The results are in for the Maryland Open GT! The tournament ended with just one player undefeated and claiming the top spot. The rest of the places are interesting (or confusing) because of how the tournament chose to do rankings. The rankings were decided by wins and losses primarily, however, it’s also combined with their opponents win percentage afterwards to rank them.
There’s been some lively discussion about this ranking method. Games Workshop recently did the same thing in San Diego. Essentially, your ranking if you lose a match is at the mercy of the people you previously played. If they do well and you win your matches then you move up the rankings.
However, if they lose, quit, or just don’t show afterwards your ranking will plummet dramatically. This is especially difficult when the tournament has random pairings. Inevitably there will be pairings where a dedicated tournament player will be paired up with someone who is new to tournament play. When the regular tournament player wins and moves on their ranking is then determined by whether or not the new player continues to play and if they win or not.
We do not intend to take anything away from the victors in this tournament. Congratulations to everyone for a job well done and incredible matches played. Our only hope was to bring some context to the tournament and how the rankings played out.
