What We Know About Contrast Paints- Nights At The Game Table

So Games workshop has released a lot of stuff over the past several years. They have maintained a product output that we have not seen out of the company in a long, long time. While their miniatures and codex releases has been off the chain, one thing that people have been asking for and have not had is a faster way to paint. Well, it looks like games workshop is planning to fix this. Behold, the new contrast paints! Games Workshop has also mentioned a new painting standard, something they’re calling, “battle ready”. So ladies and gentlemen, let’s sit down and see what we know about the new citadel contrast paints.

So What Do We Know?

Unfortunately the one thing we don’t know exactly is when they’re coming out. However, GW has said its going to hit shelves in June! Tons of people are exited about contrast paints, so I doubt GW will sit on it long. Games Workshop has been teasing contrast paint for several weeks now. Also, they have said that at last you only need one thick coat! Being somebody with a massive painting backlog, this is a huge deal! Seriously its terrible… I’m so far behind.
These paints promise to be able to give us the ability to put on, “one thick coat”. Now, the usual process for painting miniatures required several steps. First, you had to put a base coat then shade it, use layer paints and so on. Either way its a lengthy process, and while its not a big deal on a few models, it’s rough when you have 100+ gaunts to paint. However, with contrast paints you can just throw a single coat on there that will essentially do all those other steps. Essentially, contrast paint is more or less all you need to get the job done.
Also, Contrast paints will be a massive line. We’re not talking about a single new blue or red contrast paint. I’m sure some people were worried the variety of color would be limited to very basic colors on the color wheel. Well thats not the case, it’s a full line ladies and germs so buckle up

Thats Great, But Why do I  Care?

Honestly, everybody and their mom has some method of speed painting. Let’s face it, after a certain point,  you just want the job done. Also, when people get into the hobby for a while they can get stuck in the unfortunate situation of having a lot of incomplete projects sitting on a shelf. Fortunately, it seems like this is going to be the new way to speed paint, which is a big deal for someone like me who has a lot of lot of projects on my table. Also, you better believe I am going to find a way to make the process even faster, and yes there will most likely be a video on how to do it.

The New Standard

Games Workshop is also setting a new standard for painted miniatures to coincide with the contrast line. Battle Ready. Granted, this guideline is very similar to the ,”three color” requirement set by GT’s. Moreover its a nice target to shoot for that can help newer painters feel a bit more comfortable painting.
I can distinctly recall feeling a little dejected after finally finishing my first ultramarine’s and realizing they were not nearly as good as the box art. At the time I didn’t know what a shade was or even a highlight, so I just assumed I was a bad painter. Now, I would later find out that I was shooting for a somewhat unrealistic expectation for a new painter, and was way too hard on myself. Still, it can be a little intimidating being a new painter, and so having an obtainable standard is a good thing.

In Conclusion

So while we don’t have a precise  release date , I do know this for sure. I’m probably going to be getting a lot of them. Heck, don’t be surprised if I turn around and drop upwards of 60 or 70 bucks on these paint’s. Now only time will tell, but I think that this is a serious game changer. I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on some.
So whether you’re a professional painter, a beginner, or somebody who’s more into gaming and just wants to get model’s painted quickly, keep your eyes peeled for the new Citadel contrast paints!
