Goge Vandire’s rule

The Adeptus Custodes reappeared briefly during the Age of Apostasy, during Goge Vandire’s rule, during the siege of the Ecclesiarchal Palace of Terra. During this period, the Adeptus Custodes attempted to approach Vandire, but were stopped only by the Emperor’s Brides, whom Vandire had persuaded to become his personal bodyguards.

After a long and futile discussion, the Adeptus Custodes persuaded the Brides’ leader, Alicia Dominica, to accompany them to the Emperor’s presence. What happened at that time is unknown, but the consequences led to the Brides of the Emperor rebelling against Vandire, effectively ending his rule.

The Terran Crusade

Adeptus Custodes appeared centuries later during the Terran Crusade to support the revived Roboute Guilliman in his war against the Thousand Sons on Luna. Terra was besieged by Daemons shortly after, showing to many Adpetus Custodes that they had been wanting and had allowed the Archenemy’s danger to land on the Emperor’s doorstep.

Later, the Adeptus Custodes allowed Guilliman to spend a full day alone in the Emperor’s Throneroom. The apparition of a Son of the Emperor energized the Adeptus Custodes, and Guilliman and Captain-General Trajann Valoris changed the Edict of Restraint and transformed the duty of the Adeptus Custodes behind closed doors, allowing many of them to embark on Crusades across the galaxy. Members of the Adeptus Custodes will now wage war against mankind’s foes, while the Companions will keep an eye on the Emperor’s mortal form.

An Imperial Triumph

The Adeptus Custodes are so venerated that the Administratum considers it heretical to chronicle them losing a fight. As a result, each warzone where the Adeptus Custodes are sent is declared an Imperial triumph even before they arrive. The Adeptus Custodes were formerly known as the Legio Custodes or the Custodes Legion.

Organisation of the Adeptus Custodes

The Adeptus Custodes are a branch of the Adeptus Terra, the Imperial government, but their members are exclusively accountable to the Emperor and their own leaders. The Adeptus Custodes’ leader is a Captain-General, and due to the Adeptus Custodes’ significance, he frequently holds a post in the Senate of the High Lords of Terra.

There are two Tribunes beneath him, however there were three during the Heresy period. Shield-Captains are in charge of individual Custode squads. The Tower of Hegemon within the Imperial Palace serves as the Adeptus Custodes’ nerve center and command & control headquarters, while a tiny elite of three hundred Adeptus Custodes known as the Companions serve as the Emperor’s personal bodyguard and never leave his side.

Although the Legio Custodes originally numbered ten thousand men, they were reduced to roughly a thousand by the fifth year of the War Within the Web way. They have rebuilt to their previous 10,000 strength by the 41st Millennium.

Ranks & Titles of the Adeptus Custodes Army

The ranks of the Custodian Guard are noted as somewhat informal, as much gestures of respect towards veterans and gifted individuals as a true command structure.

  • Captain-General — Chief Custodian to the Emperor
  • Custodian Tribunate
  • Tribune — Senior Officer. There were 3 Tribunes during the Horus Heresy era, though now there are two.
  • Proconsul
  • Prefect
  • Lictor
  • Supreme Castellan
  • Aquila Commander
  • Captain-Commander – Command Shield-Hosts
  • Shield-Captain — Squad Leader. These are the most veteran, well-knowledge, and experienced Custodians. The rank exists concurrently with other Custodian titles such as Prefect, Lictor, Proconsul, and Tribune.

Castes & Subdivisions

Custodians belong to a caste determined by their war gear and battlefield role.

Hykanatoi– The main strength of the Custodian Guard. These are Guardian Spear-equipped heavy infantry. Their numbers included the Custodian Guard proper as well as several specialized units

Sentinel Guard — The defensive formations of the Adeptus Custodes, used to defend emissaries and special facilities. During battle, they would be charged with holding the line against enemy onslaughts and as such had a greater level of teamwork than the rest of the Adeptus Custodes. Sentinels were normally equipped with Praesidium Shields and Sentinel Blades.

Hetaeron Guard — The elite inner circle of the Adeptus Custodes. The Hetaeron Guard formed the personal guard of the Emperor himself and frequently acted as his aides and confidants. The Hetaeron Guard would only leave the Emperor’s side under the most dire of circumstances.

KataphraktoiJetbikers. They form fast attack and reconnaissance units known as Agamatus Jetbike Squadrons or Vertus Praetors. The Kataphraktoi also operate the Adeptus Custodes fighters and gunships.

Moritoi — The smallest unit of the Adeptus Custodes, they consisted of wounded brothers interred within Dreadnoughts

TharanatoiTerminators. They serve as elite shock troops, siege units, and counter-attackers.

Sagittarum Guard — A sub-unit of the Tharanatoi Caste, they were among the least common Adeptus Custodes. Their primary role was the slaying of enemies from a distance and with the use of devastating heavy firepower. In addition, they were known as the sentries of the outer perimeters of the Imperial Palace.

Ephoroi — A highly secretive order tasked with covert operations, counter-intelligence, assassination, and infiltration. During the Great Crusade it was said that they commanded the Officio Assassinorum.

Venetari – Fast Jump Pack-equipped infantry.

Custodian Wardens — Elite warriors whose skill is above all others.

Vexilus PraetorsStandard Bearers

Warders of the Vaults of Rython — Shadowy sub-force of the Adeptus Custodes deployed deep within the Imperial Palace.

Eyes of the Emperor — Sect of retired Custodians

Dankanatoi – Created during the final days of the Horus Heresy, intended to expunge all treachery from the Imperium.

Blade Champion – Champions who seek out enemy leaders.

Shield-Hosts and Companies

Sodalities, Shield Companies, and Shield Hosts are the three types of modern Adeptus Custodes contingents.

A Shield Company is a group lead by a Shield-Captain that comprises of a couple Custodian squads, a Vexilus Praetor squad, a Vertus Praetor squad, and an Allarus Terminator squad, as well as supporting vehicles. A Shield-Host, on the other hand, is made up of many Shield-Companies and is directed by a Captain-Commander as well as a Vexilus Praetors council.

Known such formations include the:

The Aquilan Shield — Shield Company

The Eagles Vigilans — Shield Company

The Gilded Talons — Shield Company. Fights under Shield-Captain Archturus Paliades.

The Solars Furies — Shield Host which battled the Necrons awakening on a world periously near Terre in late M36.

The Fury of Terra — Shield Host

The Shadowkeepers — Shield Host

The Emissaries Imperatus — Shield Host

The Solar Watch — Shield Host

The Dread Host — Shield Host

The Gilded Fist

Appearance and Equipment

Adeptus Custodes are generally larger and more powerful than Space Marines, although they are significantly more akin to the famous Thunder Warriors, having been formed through a similar method. The Adeptus Custodes’ armour is a superbly crafted kind of Power Armour, far superior to that of even Astartes models, and it is built of auramite rather than ceramite.

The Imperial Aquila is depicted on the right shoulder guard of a Custodian’s armour, and all armour is studded with priceless stones mined from the depths of Terra and crafted by talented artisans. The color of Adeptus Custodes’ left shoulder guard indicates which shield company or shield host he belongs to. The latter organizational echelon takes precedence for these purposes.

The Custodian’s tabard and whatever robes he wears will usually match this coloration. The shield company of Adeptus Custodes is frequently depicted by the color of stones. When he transfers from one organization to another, he meticulously removes stones from Adeptus Custodes’ armour and replaces them with gems of a new color. Some Adeptus Custodes enhance their protection by carrying a Praesidium Shield, Storm Shield, or wearing Terminator Armour.

The Adeptus Custodes are known for carrying Guardian Spears, powerful power weapons that the Adeptus Custodes have wielded since long before the Emperor’s captivity. The Adeptus Custodes have a strong connection to this weapon, which is portrayed on their banners and badges. Sentinel Blades, Power Knives, and Custodes Vexilla are among the other weapons carried by Adeptus Custodes. .

Custodian Guard

The Adeptus Custodes were given access to the Imperium’s finest and most advanced technologies, befitting their status as the Emperor’s protectors. This is mirrored in their vehicle designs, which are mostly Anti-grav vehicles. Grav-Rhinos, Caladius, Pallas, and Coronus Grav-Tanks, as well as Paragon Pattern Jetbikes, were utilized by the Custodian Guard. They employed the Orion and Ares gunships as aircraft, at least during the Great Crusade period.

The Adeptus Custodes have scrupulously maintained and kept much of their equipment in the ten thousand years since the Heresy. However, just a few of their technologically powerful vehicles exist, and post-heresy designs are rarely used. Adeptus Custodes ride to combat within the invincible Venerable Land Raiders when strong support is required.

Fleet

The Adeptus Custodes have their own fleet of advanced vessels that aren’t classified according to Imperial standards. The Sol System is patrolled by everything from Battleship-sized vessels to Cruiser-class spacecraft. They’ve been seen employing regular Imperial Navy ships like the Falchion Class Battleship and Tyrant Class Cruiser, in addition to their own designs. Adeptus Custodes ships are occasionally utilized by the Ephoroi caste for special missions inside the broader Imperium, and many of their craft are operated by the Solar Watch.

The Adeptus Custodes’ spaceships contain ancient translocation bays with Godstrike and Veilbreaker Pattern Teleportariums, where blessed incense wafts through the frigid air. High-ranking Tech-Priests are permanently stationed at each station, which has been sanctified to the point where even Contemptor Dreadnoughts can be transferred directly into battle.

Outlook and Training of the Adeptus Custodes Armies

Although the Adeptus Custodes were among the Emperor’s first modified troops, they were never meant to be part of a conquering army; that duty was reserved for the later Astartes legions. This is reflected in their thinking and training, as the Adeptus Custodes battle as individuals rather than as brothers or as a larger group.

This is in sharp contrast to the Space Marines, who rely heavily on teamwork and collaborative tactics in combat. At least some Astartes despise the Adeptus Custodes for their methods, and it’s possible that this was done on purpose so that they could only have a link with the Emperor himself. Whatever the reality is, the Emperor’s Custodians are unquestionably devoted to him and will carry out any assignment he assigns, no matter how violent or suicidal it may be.

An Army of Individuals

Custodians have a genetic affinity with one another inside the formation, but they lack the same feeling of brotherhood that the Astartes have instilled in them in order to function as a unit. Rather than marching in a military parade, each Custodian prepares and inspects his own equipment. The individuality of each Custode is further enhanced by the fact that the processes required to create them are not as refined or simple as those used to create the Astartes, and thus they are not “mass-produced” in the same way that the Astartes are; this means that each Custodian is a one-of-a-kind investment for the Imperium.

The awarding of names, which are added to the Custodian’s title to commemorate the actions he has undertaken in service to the Emperor (Constantin Valdor obtained 1932 names prior to the assault on Terra), is one ceremony that the Adeptus Custodes share. As a display of individual pride, such names were etched on the inside of the warrior’s battle armour.

The Body Guards of the Imperium

Because the Adeptus Custodes were bodyguards rather than soldiers, their training was vastly different from that of the Astartes. Custodians are clearly trained in the arts of assassination – both impromptu and advanced – in order to foil possible assassination attempts on the Emperor, as seen by their Blood Games. Several Custodians are frequently on detached duty during these Blood Games to ensure that the organization stays attentive against emerging threats.

It is also evident that the Adeptus Custodes are well-versed in Terran political etiquette, and have been known to operate outside of Imperial Law in order to enter powerful Noble Houses and examine any potential threats (a role that an Astartes would never be expected to fulfil.) The Adeptus Custodes are also given a deep awareness of finer notions, as befitting their station as the Emperor’s aids.

Custodes Education

Their education consists of mastery of the arts, diplomacy, geography, history, and a variety of other subjects. Given that the Captain-General frequently shares a seat with the High Lords of Terra, this feature of the Custodian mindset is important, as it allows him to negotiate the political maneuverings of the Imperium’s different agencies while still remaining an awe-inspiring warrior.

The Adeptus Custodes are not soldiers in the traditional sense. Rather, they consider themselves as the Emperor’s protectors. Not merely the keepers of his physical form, but also of his ideas and the species’ destiny. In addition to being thoroughly educated in the art of battle, they are scholars, artists, and counselors.

Martial Ka’tah Fighting Styles

Martial Ka’tahs are a set of power stances taught to Adeptus Custodes. These fighting methods can be adopted by whole Shield Hosts, and each one has a preferred Ka’tah for battle. The Shield Hosts bring generations of training to bear with ruthless accuracy in this way.

Calistus – It calls for the Adeptus Custodes to keep up relentless fire, while they advance against their enemies.

Dacatarai – It is an aggressive Imperial fighting style that has been adapted for the Adeptus Custodes’ use. It allows Adeptus Custodes to deal with hordes that vastly outnumber them, by effortlessly managing their foes’ ebb and flow. This prevents the Adeptus Custodes from being overwhelmed by the hordes. The Dread Host specializes in its use.

Kaptaris – It has been optimized to trap enemy units in close combat. This allows the Adeptus Custodes to parry, deflect attacks or prevent their foes from falling back from combat. Kaptaris is ideal for maintaining an upper hand by controlling the battlefield.

Rendax – It is used when facing a large number of foes.

Salvus – It is used by Adeptus Custodes in battles, where they want to ensure their foes are killed

Blade Champions are the only ones who can utilize some Ka’tahs. In the Imperial Palace’s Colosseia Auris, they spend years refining these styles.

Behemor – Its clinical strikes, prevent even the toughest hide or armoured hull to withstand the Champions’ blows.

Hurricanis – It lets the Champions carve their way through enemy ranks in a blur of blade and blood.

Victus – Its execution techniques have been used by Champions to claim the lives of countless tyrants and warlords.

Gene-Seed & Recruitment

The origins of the Adeptus Custodes’ Gene-Seed is a mystery. Some say the Custodian Guard are to the Emperor what the Space Marines are to the Primarchs; that the Emperor’s own genetic matrix was utilized in the development of their Gene-seed, and that this ensures their loyalty to him. Others say that the Custodians are not like the Emperor in the same manner that a Space Marine is like his Primarch, and that a different source was utilized as a template for their physical and psychological shape, a source that was lost during the Age of Strife’s anarchy.

Recent sources, on the other hand, appear to conclusively demonstrate that the Adeptus Custodes were produced from the Emperor’s own flesh and blood. The Adeptus Custodes’ genetic augmentation differs from and precedes that which was used to produce the Space Marines. Each Custodian is a one-of-a-kind work of art, the result of a lifetime’s worth of genetic knowledge.

Making a Adeptus Custodes is significantly more difficult and time-consuming than creating a Space Marine. Unlike the Astartes, whose recruits are implanted during adolescence, the Adeptus Custodes must be created during the subjects’ late childhood. Each Adeptus Custodes has its own genetic tailoring, which is significantly more sophisticated than that of the Astartes.

Personal Oversight of the Emperor…

Originally, the Emperor was supposed to have personally overseen the formation of each and every Custode. The gene-enhancements that make new Adeptus Custodes are now cloaked in secret, and only Terra’s most talented bio-alchemists and Chirurgeons are trusted to create them. The exact technique of their genesis is unknown; unlike Space Marines, they do not acquire simple implants. Rather, bio-alchemy is employed to bring about the patients’ own change, which takes root in their cells and psyche.

Adeptus Custodes recruits are reported to have sprung from the children of Terran nobles. The tradition is being carried out today, and all new initiates are chosen from among Terran nobles’ infants. Outside the Imperial Palace’s Ascensor’s Gate, new recruits are brought to the Avenue of Sacrifice.

Only a few of these candidates make it through the arduous genetic upgrades and training required to join the Emperor’s personal guard. It is unknown how long the process takes, although it is lengthy and concludes with the subject taking their name from Terra’s mythology and history.

The Finest and Most Fearsome Fighters

The Custodians are the finest and most fearsome fighters in the Imperium, owing to the potency of this upgrade. They are death incarnate to any who reject the Emperor’s will, having been biochemically molded from infancy to serve as supreme combatants, tacticians, and bodyguards.

The Adeptus Custodes’ fighters are imbued with a sliver of the Emperor’s divinity thanks to the Emperor’s cellular alchemy. Beyond their martial prowess and incorruptible nobility, this energy emerges as a near-supernatural warding, as if the Custodians were guarded by the Emperor’s hand. Bullets and bolts are deflected at the last second, blades miss their targets, and even the foe’s psychic talents might abruptly and mysteriously fade away in the face of the Ten Thousand.

Some Custodians discover that the Emperor’s holy light surrounds them in a majestic halo, blinding foes in their majesty and causing them to recoil in agony and terror.

Because the Custodian Guard does not age biologically, a seasoned officer could be thousands of years old. Warriors who decide they are no longer suited for duty will donate their armour to the gigantic Hall of Names and travel across the galaxy cloaked in a hooded black cloak, as do all their kind.

There is no war cry for the Adeptus Custodes. They battle silently and with a dreadful determination.
